Robberies in Florida
Wednesday 02-25-2009 4:48pm ET

YOU'VE BEEN POKED, AND THEN ROBBED!

A 19-year-old Bradenton, Florida man was so desperate to check his Facebook profile that he stole a laptop from a Starbucks customer. The female patron told police that she had refused the man access to her laptop before he grabbed it from her table and ran. He was tackled by two good Samaritans in the parking lot and held there until mall security could arrive. The man was charged with robbery by sudden snatching.

TRAIN-JACKED!

Well, you can't say that they didn't have ambition. A Homestead, Florida locomotive was stolen from its train yard home in a crime that is a mystery to authorities. The locomotive was waiting for assignment when, in the middle of the night, it went missing. With only two directions to choose from it wasn't too difficult for authorities to locate the missing chugger, which had been vacated seven miles down the tracks. There are no evidence pointing to the thief, though the cops believe it must be someone with previous train experience.

Aliens on Earth?
Wednesday 02-25-2009 4:47pm ET

From CNN...

Galaxy may be full of 'Earths,' alien life

As NASA prepares to hunt for Earth-like planets in our corner of the Milky Way galaxy, there's new buzz that "Star Trek's" vision of a universe full of life may not be that far-fetched.

Pointy-eared aliens traveling at light speed are staying firmly in science fiction, but scientists are offering fresh insights into the possible existence of inhabited worlds and intelligent civilizations in space.

There may be 100 billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way, or one for every sun-type star in the galaxy, said Alan Boss, an astronomer with the Carnegie Institution and author of the new book "The Crowded Universe: The Search for Living Planets."

He made the prediction based on the number of "super-Earths" -- planets several times the mass of the Earth, but smaller than gas giants like Jupiter -- discovered so far circling stars outside the solar system.

Boss said that if any of the billions of Earth-like worlds he believes exist in the Milky Way have liquid water, they are likely to be home to some type of life.

"Now that's not saying that they're all going to be crawling with intelligent human beings or even dinosaurs," he said.

"But I would suspect that the great majority of them at least will have some sort of primitive life, like bacteria or some of the multicellular creatures that populated our Earth for the first 3 billion years of its existence."

Putting a number on alien worlds

Other scientists are taking another approach: an analysis that suggests there could be hundreds, even thousands, of intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland constructed a computer model to create a synthetic galaxy with billions of stars and planets. They then studied how life evolved under various conditions in this virtual world, using a supercomputer to crunch the results.

In a paper published recently in the International Journal of Astrobiology, the researchers concluded that based on what they saw, at least 361 intelligent civilizations have emerged in the Milky Way since its creation, and as many as 38,000 may have formed.

Duncan Forgan, a doctoral candidate at the university who led the study, said he was surprised by the hardiness of life on these other worlds.

"The computer model takes into account what we refer to as resetting or extinction events. The classic example is the asteroid impact that may have wiped out the dinosaurs," Forgan said.

"I half-expected these events to disallow the rise of intelligence, and yet civilizations seemed to flourish."

Forgan readily admits the results are an educated guess at best, since there are still many unanswered questions about how life formed on Earth and only limited information about the 330 "exoplanets" -- those circling sun-like stars outside the solar system -- discovered so far.

The first was confirmed in 1995 and the latest just this month when Europe's COROT space telescope spotted the smallest terrestrial exoplanet ever found. With a diameter less than twice the size of Earth, the planet orbits very close to its star and has temperatures up to 1,500° Celsius (more than 2,700° Fahrenheit), according to the European Space Agency. It may be rocky and covered in lava.

Friday the 13th's Slipknot Show!
Sunday 02-15-2009 11:14pm ET
Loyal 96 Rock Listener Joe Shoup attended the Slipknot Concert on Friday the 13th in Baltimore...Here is his review:

Presence. Agression. Impossible. Passionate. Unparallelled. Incomparable... SLIPKNOT! This band and their live shows, have no peers. Not even close.

I had the pleasure, and I mean that in every sense of the word, to witness this spectacle called Slipknot on Friday the 13th ( ! ) at the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. I  Won the tickets from 96 Rock, which was a good thing since I was pretty much broke. So for the cost of gas and as much alcohol I could afford, I was able to attend a performance by one the best live bands ever to come along.

Me and my friend got to the show at about 8:00pm. Openers Coheed and Cambria were playing to a mostly packed place. Trivum had already finished their set. Good energy in the building, pretty diverse crowd, security was not being very,...overzealous. It made for some pretty nasty mosh pits. More on that later.

We made our way to our seats and found that we were surrounded by other ticket winners from 96 Rock, which made for some good conversation openers. Plus the usual stuff to talk about... people in the crowd. (People watching at a concert is one of the more underated activities of this world!), other shows attended in the past, blah blah blah.

Within minutes of getting to our seats, the lights drop, crowd roars, and ... showtime. Now It's on! The stage is enveloped in a red hue of light, as the band members slowly stalk to the stage, one by one, just staring menacingly at the crowd. No big intro, just the 9 musicians (yeah, 9! ) of Slipknot, peering out into a sea of screaming faces just pleading to have their teeth kicked in for the next 1 and a half hours. And this crowd and this band did not disappoint.

They opened with two songs from their first album, (sic) and then  Eyeless. Fom the opening cords and pounding of the drums and the vocal shreds being thrown out by Corey Taylor, you could just sense this was gonna be one to remember.

The entire floor was just an ocean of sweat and aggression, as the pit erupted. Yeah, erupted. Only way to describe it.The kids on the floor were throwin' down. The wall of yellow shirted security dudes in front of the stage between the crowd and the band were just graciously grabbing each kid that managed to surf their way to the front, gently put them down, and leading them to the back of the floor section for another ride. Total mayhem, helped along by  guards that weren't overdoing their job.

Slipknot proceeded to storm their way through the set, and got stronger with each passing song.Wait and Bleed, The Surfacing, Before I Forget,People = Shit, AllHope Is Gone, Psychosocial were all belted out effortlessly, but with a ton of energy and enthusiasm. How do they do this night after night? WOW!

It was not a very loud sound system, but probably one of the best I have heard. I started the show wearing earplugs, usually they filter out alot of noise and the music comes through better. But I soon found out they were unecessary. The mix was unbelievably crisp and clear. One guitar or drum or
vocal didn't overwhelm any other. It sounded as good as listening to 1 of their CD's on a bumpin car stereo.

As far as theatrics and lighting for Slipknot's set, it was preety much no frills. Nothing over the top, but a good blend of lights and ambiance for the mood of the performance. I guess the highlight of the production part of the show was Joey Jordisons drum riser hydraulicly lifting off the stage, and...turning sideways and doing dounuts during the encore. Pretty trippy. I imagine it's hard enough to play the beats for this band, let alone doing it upside down and spinning in a circle!

Slipknot came out for one encore, doin two songs. That was a real treat for me, because, having seen them 4 previous times, their were still a couple of favorites of mine I had never heard them perform. Spit It Out was, for me, the highlight of the show. Not only did it sound killer, but Corey Taylor really had the crowd eating out of his hand by the time they did this song. I have NEVER seen a pit so frenzied, and so big, and so...dangerous looking in all of my concert going years. God's honest truth. I have been to, I'm sure, well over 100 concerts in my life, from Slayer to The Eagles, and I never witnessed a crowd like this. When he told those people to step up their game in the pit for Spit It Out, they did. I watched the whole thing from my 1st level seats with my jaw wide open. Smiles, and screams, and bodies banging, jumping, slamming...it was, truly, a thing of beauty.

When I go to a concert, and pay for my ticket, drive to the venue, buy my merchandise, blah blah blah, I want to be blown away by what I see. I deserve it. So does everyone else. In the future, I would pay to see Slipknot again and again and again, because these guys do not disappoint. If you are even a remote fan of their music, go see these guys at least once! Every time I see them, and last night was my 5th time,it is like an orgasm for the soul, because for that hour and a half, I am captivated by Slipknot's performance. Taken away from all that is going on in the world, just for a while.  They are, without a doubt, one of the best live acts ever.

Next week, Disturbed in Atlantic City!!!!!

Staind Interview
Thursday 11-20-2008 3:12pm ET
Hope everyone had fun at the Staind, Seether, Papa Roach concert at the Civic Center last night.  That was definitely the biggest rock concert in Salisbury that I can remember!  Hope everyone that won tickets from us had a good time.  If you missed me interviewing Mike Mayok, Staind's Guitarist, you can catch the entire clip here.  He's a cool guy and I think I did a decent job interviewing him.  I welcome your criticism, haha....Send me an e-mail richdrake@96rocksyou.com

Papa Roach was the highlight of the evening for me.  Not only did they get the crowd involved the most, they also sounded the best.  Jacoby Shaddix was great running around on stage and getting the crowd going.  "Getting Away With Murder" was great and so was "Forever."  They definitely are good enough to be the headliners...

Another one of my favorite bands, Seether, did not do much for me.  They are one of these bands I think tha tis better in the studio then on tour.  They have great songs but not great stage presence.  And I Think the fact that Papa Roach was before them probably made it seem worse!  Seether did wrap up their set with a great version of the song "Remedy"

This brings us to the main event, Staind....They did exactly what I Thought they would...sound like Staind....The light show and their stage presence was phenominal.  Their music was cool, sounded just like them.  Aaron Lewis was a little hoarse, but that wasn't noticable.  They even went heavy with one song, and it was exactly at the right moment.  I wish they had gone heavy with one or two more, but they have so many hits that they probably wanted to fit them all in.

Hopefully more rock shows will come to our area soon!  And of course 96 Rock is the station to find that info!

Eight Things You Should Know Before Watching Pornos...
Monday 10-20-2008 2:51pm ET

HERE ARE EIGHT THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE WATCHING PORNOGRAPHY WITH YOUR LADY:

Guys . . . I know you love watching pornography.  But just because YOU like looking at smut . . . doesn't mean your lady does.

--With that in mind, here are eight things you should know . . . before asking your partner to watch a porno with you.

#1.)  Most pornography is made by men, for men . . . so don't be surprised if your lady isn't into the idea.

#2.)  If your lady agrees to watch a porno with you, but gets uncomfortable midway through . . . turn it off immediately.

#3.)  If you're getting-it-on, keep your eyes on your lady . . . NOT on the porno movie.

#4.)  Don't use pornography as a way to communicate new things you'd like to try in the bedroom.  If you want to experiment . . . just ask.

#5.)  Don't put on instructional videos (--you know, like a guide to performing oral favors).  If you do, your lady will be completely insulted.  (--And rightly so.)

#6.)  Saying things like, "I bet you could do that better than her" could be interpreted as manipulative . . . so you're probably going to want to avoid doing that.

#7.)  Be aware that the debate about female exploitation in pornography is still up in the air . . . and there's a chance that your lady will feel violated by what she's seeing onscreen.

#8.)  You might want to consider watching a porno movie that's geared specifically toward women and couples.  (London Times)

The Average Man Climaxes FOUR Times a Week
Monday 10-20-2008 2:47pm ET

The average guy has FOUR orgasms per week...Two with a partner, and two on his own!

According to a sexologist named Trina Read "Men need to have a physical release...every 24 to 48 hours...it's their Biological Predisposition because men need to spread their seed"

This according to the LONDON FREE PRESS..
